Charges reduced in domestic dispute case involving Atkins

A Sidney man allegedly involved in a domestic dispute with a 16-year-old has had the charges reduced in the case.

Scott H. Atkins, 55, was originally charged with making terroristic threats, use of a weapon and child abuse after the incident Nov. 28 at a residence in the 1100th block of 7th Avenue. He now faces third-degree assault charges, according to Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub.

According to Sidney Police and court documents, Atkins is accused of using two different knives and a small caliber handgun during the argument with the juvenile.

Prescription drugs and alcohol were suspected to be factors, police said. The knives and firearm were seized as evidence along with various items in the home. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Atkins is due in court on Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. when he’ll enter a plea.
