Sidney wrestlers pin down pair of victories at tri-meet

Sidney Invitational on tap for Saturday with 14 teams entered

OSHKOSH – In its final tune-up before hosting its signature event of the season, the Sidney High wrestling team breezed to a pair of wins in a triangular meet hosted by Garden County on Thursday night.

The Red Raiders recorded four pins on their way to a 60-18 victory over Hershey, and then registered seven falls in an 81-0 whipping of Garden County.

"We did some good things and won some matches that weren't very pretty," said Sidney head coach John Ganser. "One of our highlights would have to be freshman Devon Schilz moving up a weight class to 120 and winning by a pin late in the match versus Garden County."

In the victory over Hersey, Kaden Vowers (106 pounds), Derek Robb (138), Michael Muggli (145) and Zach Borges (160) all won by fall for the Red Raiders.

Patric Hays recorded a 7-4 decision at 170 pounds, and Kane Taylor posted a 14-12 win at 220 for the Red Raiders, who also picked up five weight class wins by forfeit in the match.

Against Garden County, Vowers and Muggli both pinned their second opponent of the night. The Red Raiders also received pins from Colton Peckham (113), Schilz (120), Brett Jaggers (132), Coby Haas (152) and Dominic Beyer (285). Jack Fedderson (126) registered a 7-5 decision in his win for Sidney.

On Saturday, the Red Raiders will host the Sidney-Bridgeport Wrestling Invitational in the high school and middle schools gyms.

Fourteen schools are scheduled to compete in the event: Sidney, Ogallala, Sterling (Colo.), Mitchell, Kimball, Chase County, Alliance, Acrcadia-Loup City, Bridgeport, Hyannis, Minatare, Sioux County, Bayard, Hemingford, Gering (JV only) and Scottsbluff (JV only).

"It's a great, competitive mix of Class B, C and D schools," Ganser said.

Wrestling will get underway at 9 a.m., with varsity matches (three mats) at the high school and JV bouts (two mats) at the middle school. All spectators must enter through the high school. Cost is $5 for adults, $4 for students.

The varsity competitors will wrestle to six places, with the top four earning medals. The championship matches are expected to get underway between 3-4 p.m.

The JV teams will use a round-robin format. All wrestlers who finish unbeaten in their respective weight classes will receive a medal.
