The Sidney High wrestling team put together a strong performance over the weekend, with a 46-27 victory over Gothenburg in a dual match on Friday night and a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Cozad Invite on Saturday.
Sidney head coach John Ganser was happy with his team's start to the season.
"It was a great weekend for the kids," Ganser said. "We were very aggressive. In the dual, we got ourselves with over-aggressiveness at times, so we need to rein that in. We're always working to get better and we need to fix some fundamentals. We need to do a better job of setting up takedowns and getting in closer on takedowns. But, we'll be ready for Gordon-Rushville on Saturday."
Sidney started out slow against Gothenburg. Freshman Kaden Vowers won the 106-pound match with a pin to put the Red Raiders ahead 6-0. But Sidney lost the next five matches and went down 21-6 heading into the 145-pound match.
But then the Red Raiders woke up. Sidney racked up points with three straight pins thanks to freshman Derek Robb (145), senior Michael Muggli (152) and senior Zach Borges (160). Patric Hayes earned four points with a 13-5 major decision at 170 and Sidney took the lead, 28-21.
At 182 pounds, Gothenburg's Tyler Miller pinned freshman Kade Price and the Swedes cut Sidney's lead to one at 28-27. But Sidney was able to lean on its core leadership to seal the win, as junior Brandon Lulf (195), senior Kane Taylor (220) and junior Dominic Beyer (285) all recorded pins in the later matches.
Sidney carried the momentum from a hot finish the night before straight into the Cozad tournament the next morning. Seven Red Raiders placed in the event.
Robb won the 138-pound division with a 4-2 decision over Alliance's D.J. Weare in the final. Beyer took second place, losing to Gering's Christian Pester, 8-7 in the championship match.
Muggli placed third in the 145-pound class, defeating Chadron's Trevyn Waldron in a technical fall, 16-1.
Vowers took second-place in the 106-pound weight class, losing a 3-1 decision to Alliance's Jorgen Johnson in the championship match. Sophomore Jack Feddersen came in fourth in the 126-pound class. Borges earned fifth-place honors in the 160-pound class. Lulf placed fourth in the 195-pound bracket.
The Red Raiders next wrestler on Saturday at the Gordon-Rushville Invitational in Gordon.
