Two Sidney High School coaches received Western Conference honors for the 2013-2014 sports year this week.
Head football coach Todd Ekart earned the Western Conference Head Coach of the Year of a Male Sport award. In his fifth year with the program, Ekart helped lead the Red Raiders to the state playoffs for a second consecutive season.
He recently stepped down as the Red Raiders’ coach, as his wife Tami has accepted a job in Kearney that will require relocation.
Assistant cross country coach Donna Wiedeburg won the Western Conference Assistant Coach of the Year of a Female Sport award. This season, along with head coach Tony Neels, she guided the Red Raiders’ varsity girls’ and boys’ cross country teams to an appearance at the Class C state meet in Kearney and one of the strongest seasons the program has had in several years.
Awards are voted on by Western Conference athletic directors. The directors vote on the awards each fall for the previous sports year.
