Sidney golf takes second at districts, qualifies for state

With its second-place finish at the district tournament in Lexington on Monday, the Sidney girls' golf team locked up a spot in next week's NSAA Class B state tournament.

The top-three finishers – Scottsbluff, Sidney and Gering-among the eight teams competing qualified for the state tournament. That tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln. Plays begins at 9:30 a.m.

Gering's Sam Rahmig won her second consecutive tournament with a score of 78. She was followed by Scottsbluff's Jordan York, who shot a 79.

Sidney completed its regular season having placed among the top three in every tournament it competed in. On Monday, it nestled itself comfortably into second, 13 strokes ahead of Gering.

In typical fashion, the team relied on its depth to heighten its spot in the standings. Four Red Raiders placed in the Top 10 in the individual standings.

This time, freshman Emma Alexander posted the best score of the morning with a 96, earning her fifth-place overall. Teammates Rachel Blauert and Megan Neal both shot 97s to take seventh and eighth.

Freshman Jordan Cook came in 10th with a round of 100, while Kaleigh Chavez finished her morning with a 110.

Sidney will aim to improve upon its fifth-place finish out of 12 teams at the 2013 Class B state tournament. Four talented seniors graduated from that team.

This year's squad features a younger crop of talent. While it lacks experience at the state tournament, it has prepared itself well by consistently earning Top 10 finishes throughout the season. Sidney didn't go through a slump at any point during the year and has competed with some of the best teams in the western half of the state.
