Eighteen people were killed in traffic accidents on the state’s roadways during August, according to data collected by the Nebraska Department of Roads. There were also 18 fatalities on the roads in August 2013.
Last month, the 18 fatalities occurred in 16 crashes. In those accidents, 13 of the 16 vehicle occupants who died were no wearing safety belts. None of the fatalities occurred on interstate roads, with nine happening on non-interstate highways and nine on local roads. Thirteen of the fatalities occurred in rural locations.
Eight of the fatalities involved victims who were between the ages of 25 and 24. Six of the fatal crashes were right-angle collisions. Two of the fatalities involved motorcycles.
For 2014, there have been 146 fatalities involving 128 crashes. Through August 2013, there had been 144 fatalities in 130 crashes.
