Congestion brings new stop signs

Traffic congestion and safety concerns have prompted the placement of temporary stop signs at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Pine Street.

"We've fielded a number of phone calls from citizens asking if there was something that we could do to help traffic from Pine get onto 13th during the heavy traffic periods of the day," said Public Services Director John Hehnke at Tuesday's city council meeting.

Pine Street has served as a detour during construction on 10th Ave., and increased traffic has presented safety issues – particularly in regards to southbound vehicles being detained on the railroad tracks.

Council member Roger Gallaway felt it would be a good idea to set stop signs in place.

"Sometimes it's just a matter of people trying to be courteous and let people off from Pine, but then they inadvertently stop traffic behind them on the tracks," he said.

Two signs were put in place at the location Wednesday morning: one at the southeast corner of the intersection facing northbound traffic on 13th Avenue, and the other situated north of the tracks on the west side of 13th Avenue facing southbound traffic.

The stop signs will be removed after completion of the 10th Avenue construction.
