Sidney golf finishes in fourth-place at first road tournament of season in North Platte

The Sidney High golf teams had the luxury of playing their first two tournaments of the season at their home course, Hillside.

With the comfortable feeling of familiarity on their home course, the varsity team came in third place at both tournaments.

But the Red Raiders finally hit the road for the first time and competed in North Platte on Friday, where they finished the tournament as the fourth-place team—out of an 8-team field—with a score of 419.

After being disqualified in the conference tournament last Tuesday at Hillside for filling out an incorrect score card, junior Rachel Blauert led the way for Sidney with a round of 97. That score was good for ninth-place overall in the individual standings. It was Blauert’s second top 10 finish of the year.

As she has in each of the first three tournaments so far, freshman Jordan Cook continued to shine, coming in second on the Sidney team with a 102. Cook has one top 10 finish so far and if not for an exceptionally tough field Friday morning, she might have had her second.

Senior Theda Parker shot a 107, while junior Megan Neal completed her 18 holes with a 113. Senior Kaleigh Chavez, who played a strong game at the conference tournament last week, completed her round with a 119.

For the second time in three tournaments, Ogallala’s Maaika Mestl came in first overall. Her round of 75 won her the opening tournament of the season and her score of 83 was just good enough for first this time, as she finished two strokes ahead of second-place Molly Cornelius of Cozad.

The golf teams’ next tournament will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Chadron.
