'Big Cheese' contest and more at upcoming Newcomer's Social

Not everyone can take home the honor of “Big Cheese” of Cheyenne County.

Area residents will compete for the title of having the tastiest grilled cheese sandwich, and this year’s Newcomer’s Social will be the only place residents can cast their votes.

The event – set for 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 18 in the Sidney High School cafeteria – helps familiarize new residents with the area and welcomes them with prizes, entertainment, and yes, grilled cheese sandwiches.

The second annual Grilled Cheese Challenge takes place during the social, giving families the opportunity to sample and vote on various grilled cheese creations. Last year, 11 teams competed for the title, each crafting a signature sandwich on site.

Attendees vote for their favorite, and the winning team goes home with the coveted “Big Cheese” trophy.

But newcomers will gain more than just full stomachs at the event.

Local organizations and clubs will have booths providing information and community leaders will be on hand to welcome newcomers and to speak about opportunities and activities in the area.

New residents – those who have been in Cheyenne County for fewer than two years – will be given packets filled with items donated by local businesses, and will be placed in a drawing for various door prizes. One lucky newcomer will walk away with the grand prize: a $600 pellet grill donated by Cabela’s.

Glenna Phelps-Aurich, president of the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce, encourages both new and established residents to attend and mingle at the event.

“Local area residents are welcome to come and meet the newcomers,” she said. “We want interaction.”

Any Chamber member business or employee wishing to compete in the Grilled Cheese Challenge can do so by filling out an entry form available at the Chamber office at 740 Illinois St., or by calling the Chamber at 254-5851. Organizations interested in hosting a booth should also call.
