Two players and two coaches with ties to the Sidney area were part of a Seward team that won the 2014 Nebraska USSSA 9U AA Gold State Baseball Championship on June 29.
Drew Covalt, formerly of Sidney, and Parker Hammond, great-grandson of Bill Hammond of Sidney and grandson of Chuck and Pat Hammond of Dalton, are members of the 9U Seward Junior Jays baseball team. The boys' fathers, Mike Covalt and Mike Hammond, are the team's assistant coaches. The 9U Junior Jays went 6-0 in state tournament play and ended the 2014 season with a record of 37-13.
