Leyton quarterback A.W. Frerichs had one day to spend at home following the West Nebraska All-Star game in Scottsbluff before traveling to Hastings for yet another stellar contest. This time, however, Frerichs will be in a more familiar setting.
The graduated senior was named to the Sertoma 8-Man All-Star Football team, which gathered for practice at Hastings College on Monday. The East and West squads will work out through the week in preparation for Saturday’s showcase event.
“It’s truly an honor,” Frerichs said. “I like that I get to play one more game.”
Last Saturday, the Warriors’ standout took part the West’s come from behind win at Bearcat Stadium. Of course, it was an 11-man all-star contest and he lined up at wide receiver. This Saturday, he will be one of four quarterbacks guiding the West against the best small school athletes from the eastern part of the state.
“We’ve grown up playing 8-man and we’re surrounded by guys who played 8-man,” Frerichs said. “We have awesome players at every position. It will be a fun week.”
Because of the talent and the wide open style of play, he expects a wild affair.
“I think it’s going to be back and forth,” he explained. “One big play could win the game or lose the game.”
The West will be coached by a couple of faces well known to the Warriors’ signal caller. Glen Lipska, Leyton’s head man, will lead the squad. Cody Gamble serves as one of the assistants.
This is the 37th edition of the annual contest, which kicks off at Hastings College at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.
“I’m really excited,” Frerichs said.
