Led by Logan Lewis and Lucas Rosenbaum - each who qualified for state in four events - the Sidney boys were crowned champions of District B-6 Thursday. The girls also had a good meet with a fourth-place finish behind champion McCook.
The Raiders boys tallied 112 points to easily outpace runner-up Scottsbluff.
But district track is more about the fight for a place at the 2014 NSAA State Track & Field Championships May 23-24 in Omaha. The top three finishers in each event earned an automatic bid to state while others may soon learn they have qualified on time. Field events also had a standard mark which would mean automatic inclusion on the bus to Burke Stadium.
As has become a routine occurrence of late, Sidney swept both 100-meter dash races. Logan Lewis and Sara VonSeggern both earned the distinction of district champions. VonSeggern was also backed up a big performance by freshman Emily Mika, who established a new personal best in the event with a 13.15.
"I'm super excited. I was so nervous before the race I was freaking out," said VonSeggern. "I knew Shanell (Primes - the runner-up) was going to be big competition for me so I had to be at my best."
For VonSeggern it is her first trip to state.
"I know it's going to be really tough at state. The competition is going to be really deep there," she said. "I would love place though. That's what I'm shooting for."
Lewis on the other hand is a veteran of Omaha. He again qualified for the 100, 200 and shot put. This year he also added the 4x100-meter relay to his schedule. He is the 2014 B-6 District Champion in all but the shot put, where he was edged out by Tanner Borchardt of Gothenburg.
Teammate Heeren also goes to Omaha as he and Lewis both threw over 55 feet.
"It was a good day for the shot putters. Everybody was throwing far," said Lewis after his 200 meters victory.
Lewis was no worse for the wear after kicking himself hard on the 200 turn as he partnered with Chance Anglin, Rosenbaum and Alex Linneman to win the 4x100. The new wrinkle to the relay team was the return of Linneman, who had missed most of the season due to an injury.
"It's hard to trust a freshman, but Alex is a gamer and a good guy," said Lewis before the race. "We've been working on the exchange and he'll be fine."
Linneman - as well as the other three - were fine. The team went sub 44 seconds to edge a strong group from Alliance.
"I've been back running and training for about a week now," said Linneman before the relay. "We've really been working on the baton handoff a lot and it's been going well. We won't have any problems."
Linneman's day also included a win in the long jump. He hit the sand at 20-07.25 to win the title by an inch over Bryce Lyons of McCook.
Rosenbaum, another state veteran, will be increasing his work load this year. He finished second in the pole vault while again surpassing 14 feet. He nearly broke his own school record on his final attempt at 14-05. He easily cleared the height. On the way down, however, he bumped the bar with his chest.
"We put the standards back on the last one," said Rosenbaum. "I guess we just learned something for state. I'd really like to get 15 feet at state."
Later Rosenbaum finished third at 400 meters and was part of two successful relay teams. In addition to the 4x100, Rosenbaum was part of the 4x400 state qualifying team. The 4x400 also included Michael Banaszak, Hayden Lienemann and Hunter Secrest.
Rosenbaum's sister, Savanna, will join her brother on the trip to Omaha. Though not her best day she again qualified in the high jump. She cleared the bar at 4-10 and finished in a two-way tie for third.
"It wasn't very pretty but it was enough," said Rosenbaum.
She also likely qualified with the 4x400-meter relay team. The group of Rosenbaum, Preslie Allen, Abby Heller and Abbie Fraas finished fourth in a season-best time of 4:09.59. Though there are only two automatic qualifiers Sidney Assistant Coach Tony Neels was confident the time would be enough.
"I just kept my eye on the Mitchell girls head the whole race," said anchor-leg runner Rosenbaum.
As for Allen, she added the open 400 to her schedule earlier in the meet. She finished second to Molly Sughroue of McCook.
The Raiders boys began their big day in the relays by qualifying in the 4x800. Jachob Wiedeburg, Brody McKnight, Lienemann and Logan Uhlir finished runner-up to the strong Scottsbluff team.
Uhlir ran the anchor leg after his teammates had put the team in qualifying position.
"I thought (Levi Avila of Mitchell) was right behind me the whole way," said Uhlir still out of breath from his effort. "The team got me a good lead and I was determined to keep it. It was good also to have Scottsbluff in front. I know they always go hard and that gave me something to focus on."
Nick Conger equalled his personal best in the high jump to earn a return engagement to Omaha. He cleared 6-04 to edge Quin Conner of Valentine.
"It's the first time I've cleared 6-04 since the Sidney meet," said Conger. "It felt really good today. Everything was clicking."
Conger further helped the team with his fifth in the 110-meter hurdles.
In addition to the automatic qualifiers, several others will await the results of the other Class B district meets around the state. In the mile Wiedeburg finished fifth in a personal-best time of 4:44.67. Sophomore Brenner Keane, though likely out of state contention, also put in a personal best at 4:57.85.
But it's not all about state for some.
"I just ran as fast and as far as I could. I'm just glad I did that well," said Keane who was the easy winner of his mile heat.
The girls sprint relay has a solid chance of qualifying also. Mika, Addleman, VonSeggern and Heller ran a season best 51.80 to finish third.
"I'm very happy about the race," said Addleman. "We came from being nothing to maybe qualifying for state."
Added Mika, "I'm excited also. We should find out pretty soon."
The 3,200-meter relay team of Alli Ehler, Maddie Stafford, Schilz and Fraas was also third and hold an outside chance of qualifying.
The NSAA will release additional qualifiers by Monday.
