Split personality

Raiders find success at two invitationals on one day

Splitting the team between two venues on Friday may have affected team point totals. Still, the Red Raiders boys finished third at Scottsbluff's Twilight Invitational on Friday. Meanwhile the girls managed third place at the George Calvert Invite in Mitchell the same day, while the boys ended up in eighth.

A pair of invaders from out of state were the story in Scottsbluff as Kelly Walsh from Casper, Wyo. and Rapid City (S.D.) Stevens finished ahead of the Sidney boys with 139 and 115 points respectively. The Raiders garnered 102 points.

On the girls side, Stevens took top honors with 195 points while Kelly Walsh's second-place total was 126.5. Host Scottsbluff was close behind in third with 120.5.

The Sidney boys managed strong performances from the usual suspects. Logan Lewis scored a new personal best in the 100 meters (10.78) to win the event by a narrow margin over Kevin Blackett (10.82) of Stevens.

"Working hard in practice is about all I can point to," said Lewis of his improvement in the 100.

Lewis picked up 10 more points for Sidney as he won another shot-put event with a toss of 53-06.75. Once again, the main threat to Lewis in the arena was teammate Jake Heeren, who finished second and also cleared 50 feet.

"It's nice to have someone there with me and be able to go one-two so many times this year," said Lewis. "We like to think we're going to finish first and second in every meet."

Lewis also contributed to the Raiders points total with a third in the 200 and a strong anchor leg in the 4x100-meter relay. The 4x100 team of Lewis, Michael Banaszak, Chance Anglin and Lucas Rosenbaum finished second despite a slight fumble of the baton after one exchange.

Though most of the girls firepower was in Mitchell, Preslie Allen managed to impress in the 800 meters by establishing a new personal best with a fourth-place finish in a deep field. Later in the meet she ran in the 4x400 relay for the first time.

"I had a girl beside me that I knew was faster than me so I just wanted to stick with her," said Allen. "After the first 100 I felt I was going a little too fast so I slowed down a little. But I picked it up again on the second lap and felt strong."

In the boys 800 meters, Allen's teammate Hayden Lienemann used a similar strategy to record his new personal best. Lienemann finished the race in just a shade over two minutes to best his previous record by about three seconds.

Before the gun went off, Lienemann had his eye on a pair of Scottsbluff runners.

"I know those two guys and how good they are," said Lienemann still out of breath from his effort. "My plan from the start was to stick as close to those guys as I could."

It was mission accomplished for the Sidney junior as he finished on the heels of the Bearcat duo Matthew Barraza and Ben Willis-Teff. Lienemann also ran a strong leg in the 4x400 relay in which the Raiders finished second.

Though it wasn't the height he was hoping for, Nick Conger added another win in the high jump to his belt. Though having to run a 110-meter hurdle preliminary race during simultaneous to the high jump, Conger still had enough energy to clear six feet.

"I was hoping I could get 6-04 today but at least I got the ten points for the team," said Conger. "Luckily I had to leave for the hurdles when the bar was only at five-ten or so. It really gets tough when you have to come back and clear something over six feet."

As for his day over the hurdles, Conger finished fourth at 110 meters. Like his longer running teammates, he was motivated by the presence of his fast company.

"I had my eye on the guy from Kelly Walsh who I could see was ahead of me," said Conger. "I just thought of trying to catch up to him in the latter part of the race and at the finish I managed to get close the gap."

In the discus, Tucker Wintholz finished comfortably in second. Wintholz has continued to improve. He hopes to put himself in a position to qualify for state next month. Kyle Krantz, who has been turning heads lately, was the winner of the event with a throw (167-11) that went beyond the 165-foot tape measure being used by the officials.

In the boys pole vault, Rosenbaum turned in a silver-medal performance. He cleared the winning height, but lost out on a tie breaker to event winner Brock Loftus from Stevens.

The Sidney girls sent their vaulters to Mitchell, Jami Flores had a strong performance as she tied a personal and meet record at 8-06. In fact the whole Raiders trio was strong in Mitchell as Jasmine Jallen was just one height behind Flores (8-0) to take third.

Jolene Oliverius also medaled in fifth to give the Raiders 18 points in the event.

Other high finishes for the girls at Mitchell were Sara VonSeggern, who won the 100 meters. Abby Heller was fifth. VonSeggern and Genessa Schilz both medaled at 200 meters by finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Schilz and Flores both scored for Sidney in the 400 as well.

In the distance events at Mitchell, Erin Lindeman was fourth in the two mile.

The Raiders best finish in the relays was its second in the 4x100 which included VonSeggern, Heller, Gabbie Addleman and Emily Mika.

Sidney will send their qualifiers to the Best of the West meet in Scottsbluff on Tuesday. The whole team will finally be united again at Chadron on Saturday.
