Boys take overall crown at Gothenburg

Trio of wins add up to strong performance by girls side

Sidney's boys edged Lexington to win the Dutch Zorn Invite at Gothenburg on Thursday evening thanks to a victory in the 4x400 relay. Led by event wins from Erin Lindeman, Savanna Rosenbaum and Preslie Allen the Red Raiders girls track team finished fifth.

Sidney Girls

With the sound of the gun releasing the field from the starting line in the 3,200 meters, Lindeman belted straight for the lead. Tagging with the Sidney sophomore was Kelsey Crymble of Ogallala, who stayed within shouting distance of the lead the entire race.

For several laps there was nothing alarming about the pace Lindeman had set for herself. After an opening lap of about 1:15, Lindeman settled into a nice groove. The trick for Lindeman on this day was to keep the pace up until the finish.

"I've never gotten a first place before so I didn't want to lose it," she said.

Despite Crymble inching closer in the final lap, Lindeman held her stride and shattered her previous best time by around 30 seconds. Her 12:43.57 marked the first time in her career she managed to break the 13-minute mark. She won the race by a little over two seconds--and needed every fraction.

"I could hear her," said Lindeman of Crymble. "But I just wanted to get that first-place medal and get under 13 minutes. I'd never had a first place before. But I felt well within myself throughout the whole race."

Other first-place medals were draped around the necks of Rosenbaum and Allen. For Rosenbaum, she went from winning the high jump at Ogallala to failing to clear a height the following week at Mitchell. The hard working Sidney junior spent the past week with her coaches searching for the right recipe to get her back in form.

"We worked a little more on my approach so that I could arch my back over the bar," said Rosenbaum. "It was a lot better today."

The proof was in the results, as Rosenbaum cleared 5-02 for the first time all season. She was the only jumper in the field to cover five feet.

Allen collected the Raiders third gold with her strong performance in the 800 meters. In the process Allen ran her fastest race of the year at 2:31.06. Though the sophomore has medaled at every meet this season, it was the first time Allen has worn the gold.

In addition to the excellent long-distance hauling, there were also strong performances in the sprints. Sara VonSeggern earned third in the 100 meters while Gabbie Addleman took fifth in the 200.

The Raiders girls also had three other near medals. Kate Brosnan at 400 meters, Mia Hernandez in the mile and Jami Flores in the pole vault all finished one spot away from a point-scoring performance.

Sidney Boys

Though the Raiders 4x400 relay team ended the meet with a gold-medal performance, they largely earned their post at the top of the team standings by placing in events more often than winning them.

The big exception to that rule was the 1-2 finish of Lucas Rosenbaum and Hayden Lienemann in the 400 meters. While Rosenbaum is an old hand at the 400 he had a surprise partner in the race. Lienemann, a strong bet to medal at 800 meters at every meet, made a rare appearance in the one-lap.

"I ran the 400 today because the 800 was too close to the four-by-four," said Lienemann. "The coaches didn't want me running the two races so close together."

Though teammate Rosenbaum was the clear winner, Lienemann helped the team picture with his strong performance. The pair garnered 18 points for the Raiders in the event.

As for the 4x400 relay, Rosenbaum and Lienemann helped their team to another 10 points with the first-place effort. Hunter Secrest and Michael Banaszak joined the team to win by nearly 12 seconds.

As usual the shot putters had a strong day, though Logan Lewis finished out of the top spot for the first time this season. Lewis took second with Jake Heeren nabbing the fourth spot. For the second time in 2014 the Raiders duo both hurled the shot beyond 50 feet.

Lewis later picked up his third silver of the day in the 200 meters.

As for Heeren, he continues to reveal himself as a legitimate contender for state at every meet. While he hopes to be the school record holder in the event by his senior year, he is presently occupied more by the notion of continued improvement.

"All my throws were constant. Each one was better than the one before," Heeren said. "I threw 47 feet on my first attempt and it kept getting better. After 47 I threw 49 and then 50."

Nick Conger picked up 8 points in the high jump with his runner-up finish. Six more points came Sidney's way wen he crossed the line third in the 110-meter hurdles.

Brendan Holly furthered the Raiders cause as he backed up Conger's performance by scoring a fifth-place medal in the high jump. Holly was one better in the triple jump where he took home fourth.

Outside Sidney's win the the 4x400, the 4x800 and the medley proved to be their strongest efforts on track. Logan Uhlir, Jachob Wiedeburg, Brenner Keane and Jarod Luptak combined to take second in the 4x800.

The seldom run medley relay consists of a pair of 200 meter legs with another at 400 meters and an anchor of 800. The team of Secrest, Michael Banaszak, Michael Muggli and Lienemann combined for a close second in the event.

Raiders Head Coach John Ganser considers the locals next event to be a "big one." The meet at Scottsbluff is scheduled for Friday, April 25 at 12:30 p.m.
