Lewis, Flores lead strong Sidney contingent

Boys take second, girls fifth at Mitchell; Wintholz throws for personal best

The Red Raiders boys finished runners-up while the girls placed fifth at the Mitchell Invite on Thursday.

On the boys side, Sidney finished with 113 points to edge out Gering (111) for second place behind meet winner Alliance, at 144.

The girls fifth-place total of 49 points put them in the middle of the pack behind meet winner Mitchell (124), Gering (94), Torrington (62) and Alliance (58).

Logan Lewis was the biggest point gainer for the boys, while Jami Flores led the girls with her triumph in the pole vault. Lewis picked up 24 points in individual events and his anchor leg in the 4x100 was the difference maker in a very close race.

For the fourth time in as many meets, Lewis was the winner of the shot put with a mark of 52-05.50. For the third time this year his sophomore teammate Jake Heeren (47-05) took the runner-up spot. The Sidney duo accounted for 18 points in the event. Lewis added to his production with a second place in the 100 meters and third at 200 meters.

In the 100, Lewis missed out on victory by just a tenth of a second as winner Jackson Dickerson's lunge at the finish provided the fraction. Chadron's Dickerson paid a price, however, as he tumbled past the finish line and was badly scraped up by the hard surface of the Mitchell track.

The Raiders boys also benefitted from the the usual strong performances of Lucas Rosenbaum and Nick Conger in field events.

Rosenbaum won his third meet this season in the pole vault with a mark of 13-06. He also ran a strong leg in Sidney's winning 4x100 relay effort. Conger, too, picked up his third victory of the season in his favorite field event. The high jumper cleared 6-02 to far outpace the rest of the field.

"I wish I could have gone six-four but my approach wasn't very consistent," said Conger. "The approach started on the grass with a slight incline and that threw me off just a little."

Teammate Brendan Holly (5-06) also medaled in the high jump.

Conger picked up six more points for Sidney in the 110-meter hurdles, completing the third place run in 16 seconds flat. He also medaled in the 300 hurdles.

Tucker Wintholz's personal best (146-0) in the discus throw helped him to a comfortable win. He hit his mark on his second of four throws. Meanwhile, teammate Brian Rolls finished in fourth.

"I wanted to hit 150 feet, but that's pretty good improvement after just three meets," said Wintholz. "I started out the year throwing 138 so if I can keep on improving like that I'll be in good shape."

In the other running events Hayden Lienemann put together another strong performance in the 800 meters. The Sidney junior finished in second place. Kane Taylor earned a medal in the 400 meters with his sixth-place effort.

Jachob Wiedeburg accumulated points with a pair of medals in the distance events. He was fourth in the 3,200 meters and sixth in the 1,600 meters. After his effort in the mile, however, he came up limping. He's lately been frustrated by soreness in his calf and pain in his ankle. He intends to have his ankle looked at before Sidney's next meet at Gothenburg on Apr. 17.

"I just want to be healthy," he said.

Among Sidney's relay teams, the 4x100 took the crown in a time of 44.97. Hunter Secrest, Rosenbaum, Chance Anglin and Lewis teamed up for the win. The Raiders captured the race by a narrow margin as Lewis caught an Alliance runner in the final few meters.

While Flores was the only event winner on the girls team, the Raiders cause was aided by a number of other medalists. Flores, a state qualifier in the pole vault last season, won the event at Mitchell with the benefit of a fourth jump. After being tied with Jennifer Figueroa at 7-6, both missed three attempts at 8-0. After both were given a fourth vault Flores broke the deadlock to the applause of the gathered crowd.

"It's not what I wanted, but it's still another month until districts," said Flores. "That's really what all these meets are for. They're really just practice for districts. I would like to get over nine feet before districts."

Behind the Flores win in the pole vault was another solid performer for Sidney. Though sophomore Jasmine Jallen didn't come away with any gold, she earned a strong third in the pole vault. Abbie Fraas scored for the Raiders in the field, too, with her medal in the triple jump.

In the sprints, Sara VonSeggern crossed in fourth place while Gabbie Addleman and Genessa Schilz took fifth in the 200 and 400 meters, respectively. In her two laps around the MItchell track, Preslie Allen's strong finish kept her in second place over bronze winner Kali Rimington of Gering.

In the long-distance runs Sidney picked up points in both the mile and two mile, thanks to Mia Hernandez and Erin Lindeman.

The Raiders 4x800 relay team including Alli Ehler, Schilz, Allen and Maddie Stafford continues to be its strongest. The group finished in third behind Mitchell and Gering.

The meet at Gothenburg is expected to get underway at 2 p.m. CDT.
