ELECTION 2014: Deadlines to file approaching for several seats

Filing deadlines for upcoming local elections are fast approaching.

Up for election this year are Cheyenne County attorney, sheriff, clerk of the district court, treasurer, assessor and county clerk. Cheyenne County commissioner seats in district two and district three are scheduled for election this year, as well. These offices all hold four year terms.

This year, there are three four-year term seats up for grabs on the Sidney School Board, as well as one opening for a two-year term due to the previous resignation of Tanya Lewis.

Creek Valley’s School Board has three seats up for election, while Potter-Dix School Board has three four-year term seats and one two-year term spot open in the next election.

There are three seats up for election on the Leyton School Board.

The Sidney Airport Authority has two spot up for grabs. Those on the airport authority serve a six year term. The city council has three spots up for election. Those on the council serve four year terms.

The seats of vice mayor Mark Nienhueser, Mayor Wendall Gaston and Roger Gallaway are all up for election.

Filing deadlines for incumbents for all local offices is Feb. 18. The deadline for non-incumbents is March 3. An incumbent is defined as anyone who currently holds a local office. This means that anyone running for reelection will have to file before Feb. 18. The primary election for these offices will be held May 13.

So far, there has only been one filing for any local office. Darrell Johnson filed to run for commissioner district two last week, which is currently held by Harold Winkelman. Filing forms to run for all offices can be picked up at the county clerk’s office, excluding those running for Creek Valley School board who must file in Deuel County.

Anyone filing for assessor must present his or her certificate to the county clerk, anyone applying for sheriff must be a certified law enforcement officer or have a letter from the criminal justice department and, of course, those filing to run for county attorney need to be admitted to the bar. Anyone wishing to file for any open positions can come to the county office, or call or email county clerk Beth Fiegenschuh about necessary paperwork and qualifications.
