Berner strong in Leyton's opener

Girls fall in second game of Bayard Invite

In their season opener at the Bayard Invite, the Leyton Warriors spoiled the host's opener with a 42-39 victory on Friday in girls basketball action. Leyton's weekend was dampened a little the following day as they were dropped by Lingle-Fort Laramie (Wyo.) 55-20.

Kaitlyn Berner was a strong force for the Warriors, with a team leading 15 points. She was backed up by 7 points by Diedra Waite, 5 from Dani McKay and 4 each by Jessica Houk and Natalie Cruise.

Berner and Waite were also strong at the other end of the floor with 9 and 8 rebounds, respectively. Emily Gill pulled down 5 boards.

Berner's defensive effort included 8 steals to lead all players. Cruise and Houk each added 3 thefts.

In the Warriors matchup on Saturday they could not manage better than 6 points in any quarter. Carly Rushman and Waite equalled the teams best quarter output with a team-high 6 points each.

Kelsey Waite (5) and Berner (3) were the only other players to register offensively for Leyton.

The Warriors travel to Peetz for another out-of-state rivalry game on Tuesday afternoon.
