York upsets Gretna; will face Omaha Skutt Catholic in class B football finals
By virtue of their semifinal wins on Friday the York Dukes will meet the Omaha Skutt Catholic Skyhawks in the final of the Nebraska Class B High School Football Championship next Monday night.
The No. 4 Dukes upended the No. 1 Gretna Dragons on their home ground 12-7 after converting a fourth quarter turnover into the winning touchdown. Gretna advanced to the semis with a last-minute score against visiting Sidney the week before. Though York managed only four yards rushing, its quarterback Linden Kaliff went 21 of 34 passing for 238 yards and a touchdown. The York defense held Dragons quarterback Nick Stoletenberg to 67 yards passing.
York (11-1) opened the playoffs by knocking off No. 13 Scottsbluff 26-13 on Nov. 1. In the quarterfinal round the Dukes outlasted Ralston 42-41 in an overtime thriller to earn the right to play Gretna. Skutt Catholic opened its playoff run by beating 15th seeded Norris 28-14. As did York, the Skyhawks also survived an overtime affair in the quarterfinals. They eliminated No. 10 Elkhorn South 38-37 in double overtime on Nov. 8.
All of the Nebraska championship games will be held at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Class B will take place on Nov. 25, at 7:15 p.m. CST.
The Class A matchup will include No. 4 Omaha Westside versus No. 2 Omaha North on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. The two finalists in Classes C1, C2, D1 and D2 will be determined after semifinal games are played Monday and Tuesday.
