On the verge of disbanding, Ladies Chamber commits to another year

For months, members of the Cheyenne County Ladies Chamber feared that the end of their organization was just around the corner. Members were reluctant to step into the officer positions due to the time commitment and current officers, like Diane Scott for example, felt as though she did not do the presidency justice.

Family issues required her full attention during chamber term.

After much consideration, the current officers decided to spend another year leading the Ladies Chamber. Scott will once again be the president, and Sally Harris and Margie Surber will remain secretary and treasurer, respectively. The organization lacked a vice president last year, but they are hoping to appoint a member to the position in 2014.

"I didn't want to see the Ladies Chamber disband," Surber said. "We're hoping that some of the projects will cause gals to step up and be more active on committees so that the officers won't have to shoulder so much of a time commitment."

Some of the newer members have expressed interest about stepping into the leadership roles after a year of involvement.

"We have someone who's said that after they're in for a year, they'll take over the presidency," Scott said.

Ladies have run projects for many years, but did not want to commit to an officer role. The board is working to be more active to relieve the heavy burden that often falls on the president. No one could fathom the organization ceasing to exist.

The Ladies Chamber meets on the first Monday of every month, and encourages any woman in the community from ages 18 to 90 to join. Scott is willing to answer questions of potential new members, and encourages anyone interested to call her at 254-2984.
