Local businessman Greg Huck finds it hard to say no to a cause
Greg Huck promised himself he would not end up like his father.
The owner of Sidney business Financial Partners grew up with a father who volunteered for just about every community event or cause. So Huck vowed to set limits.
They didn't last.
"Whether we like it or not, a lot of our parents rub off on us,” he said.
Nowadays Huck volunteers with several local charities, serves on the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce board and participates as often as possible when events are planned.
“How can you help other people, how can you help them to succeed?” he asked. “I always say you need to find your passion. If you find what your passion is, you will be fantastic at it."
Huck donates a lot of time with the Guardian Conservatorship, helping disabled or impaired men and women in need of help. He currently serves as a trustee for a young woman and supports a young man the state can no longer provide for.
In fact, the 23-year-old works at Financial Partners and is considered part of the family.
"I love him to death, I absolutely love working with him,” Huck said.
Huck does not handle any money for the young man, as this would be a conflict of interest. As a guardian, however, he provides support in day to day decisions.
Huck moved to Sidney in 1991 from the oil fields of North Dakota, where he had been injured in an explosion. He spent six months recovering in a burn center and tried to go back to work.
"When I returned I just couldn't do it, the noise would bother me,” he said. “I'd hear a backfire and I would be a mile down the road."
His brother Mike worked in financial planning and suggested it would be a field that would suit Huck. He studied, received his license and considered five locations to start an office.
"Sidney was the one we really liked,” he reported. “We liked the school system, it was a nice community—for us it fit our family."
Originally from Moorhead, Minn., Huck met his wife Linda while managing a motel in Dickerson, Minn. They married and had three sons. Now the couple counts five grandchildren, as well.
Like his father, he still finds time for work, family and every volunteer opportunity that comes his way.
