Robb named team MVP at all-star event; Local athletes fuel strong West performance

After the West Nebraska All-Star Volleyball game Saturday, Sidney's Kali Robb was all smiles as she greeted friends and family members afterward.

Despite the West dropping four-of-five games it was, after all, an exhibition game. The team first came together on Wednesday and held just five practices.

The West opened the match at West Nebraska Community College's Cougar Palace looking like it might take the contest for the eighth consecutive year. West won on the first game 25-22. After Robb slammed home the West's third consecutive point to tie game two at 24, the East prevailed 27-25. The East won the final three games as well, 25-19, 25-15 and 15-10.

Robb punctuated her stellar high school athletic career by earning the West Team's MVP award with her dominant play at the net. Robb led her team with 15 kills. She also added nine points serving, had 12 digs and two blocks. Sam Kennedy won MVP honors for the East.

"A lot of playing in this game is fun but there is a competitive side to this game too," Robb said. "It was a real surprise to be voted the MVP. It's nice to win it. It's a real honor."

Robb is off to Concordia University, where she will join her high school teammate Segelke. Both will be on the track team. As for volleyball, Robb will not play in her freshman year but hopes to play later in her college career.

Other local players who participated in the game were Karissa Segelke and Madi Malzahn of Sidney High School, Rachel Ernest of Leyton High School and Conner Wolff of Potter-Dix High School.

Wolff and Ernest picked up 12 and 10 points respectively off there serves. Wolff's 12 led the West. Segelke was dependable in several phases as she picked up seven kills, eight service points and nine digs. Malzahn led both teams in assists with 19, several of which set up her high school teammate Robb.

As for the fun versus competitive nature of the all-star game, Malzahn considered the mix to be about equal.

"It 's been different. It was exciting to play with a lot of players you played against during the season," Malzahn said. "But you definitely want to win too."
