Some things just aren’t made to stay the same.
At Bulldog Stadium in Alliance on April 30, Sidney senior Sam Arterburn was locked in a neck-and-neck struggle for second place in the 1,600-Meter Run. When it was over Levi Avila of Mitchell left Arterburn nearly four seconds behind. The Sidney miler had to settle for third.
Six days later things were different.
The Sidney Girls proved best of the pack at the Bayard BCD track meet with 114 points to host Bayard’s 99.5. Bridgeport finished third with 63. Creek Valley was 11th in the 15-team meet with 26 points.
The boys were narrowly defeated by Alliance 130-127 while Mitchell was third with 99.5 points.
“We did a good job by gaining depth points,” said coach John Ganser. “It makes a big difference to the team score when we pick up fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishes.”
Perhaps nowhere did Sidney’s depth shine through more than it did in the boys 1,600 meters. In addition to the aforementioned Arterburn, Jacob Wiedeburg and Brenner Keane helped the Raiders gain 17 points in the event.
Part of the reason: This time Arterburn didn’t settle for third. After running side-by-side with Avila in the early going, Arterburn began pulling away. Once he pulled away, he stayed away. He even managed to gain on race winner Cody Franklin of Bridgeport in the late going.
By race end Arterburn had smashed his personal best and left Avila exactly six seconds behind. Arterburn’s new persoal best is now 4.48.20.
“The coaches were pushing me hard all week and I felt ready,” Arterburn said still out of breath from his effort. “I had it in my head today that I was going to compete.”
Perhaps he set the perfect example for his younger teammates. Weideburg shaved 12 seconds off his effort from Alliance in 4.55.70 to earn five-fourth place points. Keane was nearly as good in 4.56.40 for fifth place and four points.
It should be noted that there was a head-wind issue down the back stretch at Alliance. However, the numbers suggest it was the Raiders improvement that was the compelling factor in the results. Afterall, Avilia improved by three seconds. That still wasn’t enough to get him past Arterburn.
Among the many other impressive performances, there was Logan Lewis and Morgan Linneman making a Sidney sweep of the “Best Athlete of the Meet” awards.
Linneman had a perfect day while winning the 100 and 400 meters. She also ran the anchor leg in two winning relays: The 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400 meters. In the 400-meter dash she narrowly missed breaking the minute mark in 1.00.15. But she has more than breaking a minute or less on her mind.
“I want to break 59 but that didn’t happen today. But it’s not something I think about when I run,” Linneman said.
Lewis was the winner in the 100 meters, 200 meters and shot put. He was also on the 4 x 100 meter relay team which finished second.
“It’s perfect timing with everthing seeming to come together with districts coming,” Lewis said. “I’m very excited about today. I’d like to keep the momentum going.”
Karissa Segelke had to create momentum where none existed. At least so she thought. Though she finished in second place in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, she was less than thrilled about her performance in the 100.
“It was an alright race I suppose, but I wasn’t happy with it,” she said. “I think it motivated me for the 300 which I was much happier with.”
Segelke finished a half second behind her Alliance time in the 100 while improving her 300 by more than eight tenths.
As for the milers on the girls side, Alli Ehler finished third and Erin Lindeman eighth to show a little depth of their own. Ehler also picked up a third in the 3,200-meter run.
Rounding out the girls running events, Abby Heller was the only other point getter with an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Kali Robb put in her usual strong performance by picking up 25 points in the field events. She won the shot put and discus while finishing fourth in the triple jump. She also took her regular spot on the 4 x 100 winning relay.
In other girls field events, Savanna Rosenbaum was third in the high jump, Kylee Price took fifth in the long jump and Ashley Stafford and Jasmine Jallen were seventh and eighth respectively in the pole vault.
On the boys side, the performances of Lucas Rosenbaum and Nick Conger spoke volumes amid a day of strong performances. Rosenbaum dominated the pole vault with a personal best 13-3. Brady Shimp of Alliance, in second place, only managed 12 feet.
“I had a few good tries at 13-9, but it wasn’t quite there,” Rosenbaum said.
Conger was strong in the high jump with his personal best of 6-4. Brendan Holly was also a point earner with an eighth-place finish. Holly picked up another point in the long jump.
In the triple jump, Rosenbaum picked up six more points by finishing third.
In running events, Hayden Lienemann and Wiedeburg were the only other podium finishers for the boys. Lienemann was second in the 800 meters while Wiedeburg added a third in the 3,200-meter run.
In other boys field events, Brian Rolls was the top Raider finisher with a seventh in the discus. Freshman Jake Heeren backed up Lewis in the shot put by finishing third.
