Sidney finishes mid pack at Gothenburg

The Raiders golf team finished in sixth place out of 13 schools competing at the Gothenburg Golf Tournament yesterday. Sidney’s aggregate score was 364.

Scottsbluff took top honors with a combined score of 312. McCook (317) and Broken Bow (324) finished second and third respectively.

Individually for Sidney, Taylor Barton finished 12th with a score of 80 at the par-72 Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg. Also competing for Sidney were Brendan Brown (90), Ryan Birner (97), Brady Radcliffe (97), and Garrett Wamsley (101). The top four scores count in the team competition.

Kade Brown of Decatur Community H.S. in Oberlin, Kan. took the individual honors with an even-par 72. Sean Backer (74) and Tanner Johnson (75) were second and third.

Barton started out extremely well going out in 36. On the back nine, however, he struggled, recording a 44--including an unfortunate quadruple bogey on the par-4 10th.

“I just didn’t focus hard enough on those putts on 10,” said Barton of his four-putt 10th hole. “On the front nine I hit the ball very solid. I think I let the wind affect me a little too much on the back.”

Winds blew steadily from from the south at 33 mph with gusts up to 40 mph in Gothenburg. The Wild Horse Golf Club is a very open course with no barriers to break up the swirl.

One of the wrinkles for the Raiders this season is that they carry three freshmen. The recent break in the schedule forced by snow storms have been a problem for all local programs, though it may be the youngest teams that can least afford the loss of experience.

“This is just our second meet of the year and we haven’t really practiced the past three weeks,” said Sidney assistant coach Jeff Yahn. “For the freshmen, yeasterday was the first time they have seen this course.”

Yahn took his team out to Gothenburg a day early for some practice time.

“Mike (Brockhaus - Sidney A.D.) was gracious to allow us to come a out here (Wednesday),” said Yahn. “It was a valuable experience but the wind was blowing just as hard yesterday but from the opposite direction.”

While the wind was an issue for all, one of the Sidney freshmen was more troubled by other matters.

“I drove the ball pretty well today but my putting kept on getting in the way,” said Wamsley.

Wamsley made his comment after hitting a solid tee shot about-20 feet past the hole on the par-3 ninth. He ended up three putting for bogey.

Sidney’s next match is today at Chadron. On May 2, the team will be at Gering.
