Creek Valley's Godfrey earns MAC win

Creek Valley’s Lane Godfrey braved the stiff winds of the Oshkosh Country Club to take top individual honors in the MAC golf tournament with an 85 Thursday. As a team, Creek Valley managed a second-place finish with a combined 443 strokes. Garden County was first with 339.

Potter-Dix was also represented at the the MAC tournament, but could only field three golfers. The Coyotes were led by Kyle Gorsuch, who finished third with a 99.

“Kyle didn’t have his best day. I think overall we were a bit rusty,” said Potter-Dix coach Keving Thomas. “At Bayard he Kyle shot an 84.”

Cory Phillips of Creek Valley was the fourth place individual finisher with a 101. Though he had a tough start, Phillips rebounded on his second nine, knocking off seven strokes.

In addition to the MAC tournament, the previously postponed Garden City Tournament was held concurrently with a total of 11 teams competing. Godfrey’s 85 placed him 5th in the GC. Additionally, Gorsuch finished 23rd and Phillips 24th.

Until yesterday, neither Creek Valley or Potter-Dix had competed since April 2. The recent string of bad weather has been a problem for all local schools and has even prevented teams from getting in much practice.

“It’s been so long since we’ve played a match it was hard to know what to expect,” said Creek Valley coach Cyd Hanson. “It was just nice to be back in action again.”

Of the few practices Creek Valley has been able to hold during the past three weeks, most have been held indoors. Potter Dix managed a couple of days of practice earlier in the week.

“Considering the conditions and lack of playing time, I thought Lane (Godfrey) in particular and the team in general played very well,” said Hanson.

Freshmen Colin Brott and Wyatt McMillen rounded out Creek Valley’s top four. Sam Bogert and Taylor Juelfs competed with Gorsuch for Potter Valley.

“They’ve played very little golf and this is a great experience for them” Hanson said of her freshman. “They handled the difficult conditions reasonably well.”

Potter-Dix and Creek Valley will next be in action on May 2, when they travel to the Kimball Invitational.
