Despite uncooperative spring weather the American Legion Post 17 baseball program has already put in some hard work. Legion baseball held about a dozen practices to date, though many have necessarily been held indoors. This past Sunday the squads took advantage of a rare break in the snow storms for an outdoor workout.
“Despite the bad weather we’ve managed to be pretty productive nonetheless,” said first-year seniors head coach Tim Herrera.
As the team prepares for another season it’s a reminder that fundraising is a neccessary part of keeping the program going. Towards that end, there are two upcoming events that will benefit American Legion baseball.
On May 5, at 5 p.m. a silent auction and dinner will be held at Buffalo Point Restaurant in Sidney. Tickets are $20 apiece and must be purchased by April 29. Items being auctioned off will be appropriate for both men and women.
“It’s going to be a fun event and very improtant to our program,” said Herrera. “All the procedes will benefit American Legion baseball.”
Tickets for the dinner and auction can be purchased from any coach, board member or player. For more information you can call coach Herrera at (308) 249-5260 or Jen Holtz at (308) 249-3809.
A car wash is scheduled for April 28, at the First United Methodist Church at 2622 11th Ave., in Sidney.
As for the baseball, it’s still too soon to know how the team will shape up. Several of the senior players will not be joining practice until they return from college. Only about a dozen players were available to attend the Sunday practice. The Sun-Telegraph will do a full preview of the junior and senior teams in the coming weeks. The season begins in the third week of May.
Coaching assistants on the senior team are Mark Onstott and Mike Harvey. Head coach for the junior team is Tommy Arellano. His assistants are Wes Smith and Jacob Wilson.
