Potter-Dix boys’ basketball coach Chad Miller and the girls’ basketball coach, Jeff Einspahr, went before the Board of Education at their April meeting asking for approval to follow the NSAA’s five day moratorium during Christmas holidays.
Einspahr told board members that children who play basketball tend to “get out of shape” during the holiday break and they need to “stay in practice”--that even five days off makes a difference. The pair requested access to the gym for optional practices during the holidays.
A motion was made for this and it was approved.
The coaches also expressed desire to have the option to join in a basketball tournament that benefits the Nebraska State Hall of Fame.
The tournament would be a couple of days around Thanksgiving. The location would be determined at a later date.
Superintendent Kevin Thomas said that the gate won’t make enough to cover expenses. Thomas added that basketball games cost a lot of money to host, and they are basically “already in a deficit” when they are held.
Board members were generally concerned that the kids are likely to burn out, and they need breaks in the schedule. Thomas reminded everyone that the basketball season is the longest of all sports seasons.
The board members decided to table the discussion for now.
