Leyton Board of Education announce student of the month

The Leyton Board of Education (BOE) held their monthly meeting on April 8.

They announced their students of the month for March for grades 5 through 8 and for grades 9 through 12.

Fifth grade student Drew Haley was chosen because he is friendly to all of his classmates and he goes out of his way to make others feel accepted. He is also a good student who takes pride in his work. He can often be seen with his had raised with a challenging or humorous question in mind. Drew is honest, an all-around kid who works to become better.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Berner was selected because she is an outstanding young lady who has work ethic that is second to none. She is dedicated to her studies and has set career goals. Kaitlyn appreciates challenging classes in large part because she understands that they will help to prepare her for this long term goal. Kaitlyn defines what it means to be a student athlete and she represents Leyton positively at activities.

The board members made a motion and approved the installation of new electrical panels in the old part of the Dalton building. This is for the Elkhorn Electric portion of the work that will be in conjunction with Day and Night’s HVAC work that was discussed in a special-called March BOE meeting.

In the March special-called meeting, board members discussed bid proposals for the heating and cooling units. The motion was approved to accept Day and Night’s proposal for HVAC system in combination with Elkhorn Electrical for electrical upgrades/system requirements totaling $484,952.81

In the April 8 meeting, Jim Ford with Elkhorn Electric presented his estimates for changing five electrical panels, installing distribution panels and receptacles for the busses. The replacement of the boiler room panel was not included in the estimates. Also, these estimates were not for all upgrades, only for the portion of the work that is to do with Day and Night.

The breakdown of price: For wire and equipment, $31,000; service equipment, $18,835; inspection, $350; lift, $400; roof top penetrations, $2,000; conduit and fittings, $6,578. Labor estimate is $42,000. Total $101,163.

Ford informed the board members that once the transformer work begins, the school will be without power for one week. Ford said that generators can be brought in if it is necessary.

The entire job will take approximately two months to complete. If the work is started around the first of June, it should be complete by early August.

Ford added that the panels could be installed on the rooftops prior to beginning the major work just to get that out of the way and it wouldn’t affect anything since they could do that work on Saturdays.

The majority of the work will begin after the “All School Reunion” that will be held on June 1 because concern was expressed about how the installation would affect maneuverability through the school.

The next regular BOE meeting will be May 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dalton High School superintendent’s office. The public is welcome to attend.
