Cheyenne County Art Guild show this weekend

The winner of Best of Show at the 42nd annual spring art show was titled “Balloons.” It was created by Ethan Nelson for the category of computer generated.

“Balloons” was chosen by the art show judge, Pete Younger, from Sterling, Colo. Younger was an art instructor at Northeast Community College.

Entries include pieces in oil, water color/pastel, mixed media, acrylic and colored pencil; photography; sculpture; fiber art and miscellaneous. Each category was judged on three levels: Beginner, advanced and professional.

According to art guild member Chuck Borger, the professional level defines artists who regularly show and sell their artwork. The advanced level attracts members who create more for enjoyment, but it is more than a hobby. The beginner level applauds the casual artist.

There are around 100 pieces on display this weekend at the community center. Borger stated that the number is a bit lower than in previous years, but that the quality of the work is as good or better this year. Borger added that there are no new artists this year.

This year’s show is dedicated to Liz Borm, one of the original Cheyenne County Art Guild members who passed away in 2012. Borm was from Lodgepole and her son still resides in the area.

Borger said that the art guild has existed for more than 40 years; there are still a few original members and they welcome new members to join.

All artwork is for sale. There are also bins that contain work from previous years for sale at discounted prices.

There are $1 raffle tickets for artwork by Paul Adkinson, and there is a door prize of artwork form Virg Shoemacker.

Attendees are able to vote for their favorite piece of art. Votes will be tallied and the work with the most votes will be given the peoples’ choice award.

Entry to the show is free and it is open to the public. Saturday hours are from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m.
