Most of the year, firefighting is a serious matter. For one night, however, the department gives way to plain old fun.
The 134th annual Fireman’s Ball for fire district one is on April 5 at the Cheyenne County fairground’s 4H building. The band starts at 8 p.m. and the festivities will continue until 1 a.m.
Entertainment will be provided by Loaded Dice, a cover band from Scottsbluff. Admission is a $5 donation at the door.
Due to on-site alcohol sales, this is for 21 and over only. The fire department gets a special license to sell alcohol at this annual event.
Stacy Hanley, a volunteer fire fighter with fire district one, says that this is a night for the community, and this is how the fire department shows their appreciation for what the community does for the fire department.
All proceeds from donations and sales at the event will go toward the purchase of equipment for the district one fire department. Hanley added that there is a misconception that proceeds go to the firemen.
The district one volunteer fire department is made up of people who are employed in a wide range of fields, but they are always on call for the fire department. When a call comes in, those who are able to respond rush to the station to gear up and go to fight the fire.
Hanley says that there are “some very devoted members” with the district one fire department, and that they appreciate the communities that they are serving.
Hanley says that everyone over the age of 21 is welcome to attend. There is no dress code for the ball.
