These South Panhandle 4-Hers earned the right to compete at the Regional 4-H Pubic Speaking Contest by participating and earning high marks at the South Panhandle contest held on Thursday, March 21, at the Kimball-Banner Fairgrounds in Kimball.
Novice speaker Kalem Jackson, Harrisburg, earned a blue ribbon for his poetry recitation of “Amazing Astro Cow.” The novice category does not advance to the regional contest.
Junior public speaking participants are 8 to 10 years old and must present an original one-to-three-minute speech on a 4-H topic. Chloe Berger, Kimball, “Lessons from a Skirt”, blue; Felicity Beyer, Sidney, “Taking the Lead”, purple; and Haddie Grubbs, Harrisburg, “The Life & Times of Corduroy”, purple.
Intermediate participants are ages 11-12. Their speeches are three to five minutes in length. Participants were Lexie Jackson, Harrisburg, “The Troublemaker”, purple; and Rylie Mason, Harrisburg, “A Summer with my Pigs”, blue.
Senior participants are over the age of 13 and must present a speech that is five to eight minutes in length. Participants were Will Castner, Sidney, “How 4-H Enriches My Life”, blue; and
Ethan Nelson, Dalton, “The Puppy Test”, blue.
Four 4-Hers recorded original 60-second public service announcements. Felicity Beyer, Sidney, blue; Ayden Cross Harrisburg, blue; Will Castner, Sidney, purple; and Ethan Nelson, Dalton, purple.
This year, a new category was added to the contest. The interview contest has multiple parts. Participants chose from one of three posted jobs. They prepared their resume and a cover letter prior to the contest. At the contest, participants completed a job application and interview. Participants were Will Castner, Sidney, blue; and Rachel Reiser, Sidney, blue.
The regional contest is set for Saturday, April 27, at the ESU 13 in Sidney. All participants received Dairy Queen coupons from the restaurants in Kimball and Sidney.
