Monsanto’s representative Bob Cummings presented two $2,500 checks to the Cheyenne County 4-H Council as part of their America Farmer’s Grow Communities (AFGC) during the annual spring carnival on March 16. Chris Meyer was the local farmer who was chosen to select the recipient for the check. He chose the Cheyenne County 4-H because he was a part of the council while he was growing up.
The award was originally $2,500, but because this is a draught year, Monsanto’s decided to double the award.
Cummings stated that AFGC gives back to communities and that in draught designated areas, the money is doubled. AFGC has grown fast and the applications have increased so more funding is being added to help, Cummings added. The program, which launched in 2010, allows farmers to enter to win $2,500 for their favorite community nonprofit organization, such as; 4-H, FFA, Schools, Fire Departments and other civic groups.
This year’s theme was “Shoot for the Stars.” A variety of activities and games filled the fairground building including a cake walk, pillow fight area and a theater. Raffle tickets were purchased for a variety of wonderful items. Food selections included hot dogs, taco salads, chili, nachos and a large selection of pie and deserts. Ticket and food prices were manageable for all budgets.
The Cheyenne County 4-H Council organizers did a wonderful job with this year’s carnival and it was an enjoyable evening for the hundreds of children and adults who attended.
