WELDONA — Getting strong pitching, and running with abandon on the basepaths, the Peetz (Colo.) High School baseball team opened its season Monday afternoon with an 11-6, 12-2 sweep of host Weldon County.
“We were aggressive,” coach Darrin Fehringer said. “We stole a bunch of bases, and fought through the first-game jitters. The first game was close for a while, and we were more patient at the plate and played better in the second game.”
In the opener, the Bulldogs used a five-run fourth inning to break things open a bit for starting pitcher Austin Crane (1-0). Crane went four innings, allowing five runs on just two hits. He walked eight, hit three batters and struck out eight.
Brady Holtz came on and finished up, allowing just one run over the final three innings. Holtz fanned six, giving Peetz hurlers 14 strikeouts in the lid-lifter.
Troy Clevenger was 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch twice; Crane had a hit, two walks and three runs scored; and John Ommen was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Peetz won the nightcap in five-inning, slaughter-rule fashion. The Bulldogs jumped to a 5-0 lead after a half-inning and never looked back in support of Josh Cavender.
Cavender fanned five, walked two and scattered two hits and runs.
Crane, Josh Cavender, Ommen and Josh Fiscus all had hits for Peetz. Crane scored twice, as did J. Cavender, Ommen had a run scored and Fiscus walked twice and crossed the plate once.
Peetz will battle this elements today at 1 p.m., when it hosts Merino (Colo.)
