Shelby Roelle and her business associates celebrated their 10th year anniversary of buying House of Flowers this Feb. 4.
Roelle is a Sidney native and lived in the town most of her life. She graduated from Sidney High School before attending the University of Northern Colorado.
“The House of Flowers has been around for a long time and the name is at least 40-yrs-old,” said Roelle.
The owner said that she has always wanted to own her own business and that after graduating college with a degree in business management she was looking for a way to get back to the small town life and find a business that she would adore.
“What made me decide to move back was we were living in Denver and I missed the small town atmosphere. Being born and raised here I wanted to return to my rural roots,” she said.
Roelle said that other reasons to move back to Sidney were to raise her children in a safe small town and to be closer to family members that still live in Sidney and her in-laws who live in Peetz.
The owner said that she has always enjoyed doing crafts and seized the opportunity to run the House of Flowers as soon as she saw it on the market. She said however that she never envisioned a flower business would be in her future.
“I always enjoyed doing crafty things and once I heard that this business was for sale it really interested me and I always thought it would be a fun business to own,” she aid. “But honestly I had never before envisioned myself here. I knew I always wanted to own my own business but I never ever thought that a flower shop is where I would end up. But I’m here now and I’m happy.”
Roelle said that on top of arts and crafts her passions are clothing styles and fashion and interior design, two aspects that can be useful in the flower arrangement and decoration business.
The store is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Roelle sells items for every occasion.
“We sells fresh flowers, plants, balloons bouquets, plush stuffed animals, candles, candy bouquets (a popular item) and we also offer indoor tanning among other things,” she said.
Whether you are planning a wedding, funeral, birthday or any other event, Roelle said that her team specializes in customizing products for customers.
“Sometimes people will come in and like a certain style but want different colors and we customize for them no problem.”
Roelle said that she is happy to be in Sidney not only for the calm feelingthat comes from a small town but also the interaction with customers.
“You really get to know your customers and make a connection with them in a small town. There’s just something about the atmosphere,” she said. “One thing that is really important to me is customer service and understanding the customer and what they want. I want every customer leaving happy.”
The flower business has become something that not only makes Roelle happy, but she said she also likes how it makes customers feel as well.
“With fresh flowers you are always making people happy because people enjoy receiving them. There’s just something about flowers that brightens people’s day,” said Roelle.
