Coyotes slip past Crawford at SHS; reaches Sweet 16

Down eight points late to Creek Valley in Monday night’s opening-round, the Potter-Dix High School boys’ basketball team probably couldn’t dream the position it is in today.

However, Chad Miller’s upstart and fourth-seeded Coyotes completed a sweep at the Sidney D1-12 Subdistrict Thursday by rallying past Crawford 49-44 at Cabela’s Athletic Facility.

Bryan Knigge scored six straight points to give P-D (9-13) a 43-42 lead with about a minute left, and the Coyotes were able to hang on at the foul line.

Potter led by 10 points early, and held a 23-16 halftime lead before the Rams (11-12) rallied in the second half, on the strength of 6-foot-5 swingman Taylor Osmotherly.

Osmotherly scored a game-high 25 points, and was a load to handle in the second half.

“We did a pretty good job getting help defense inside on him early,” Miller said. “But in the second half, they moved him outside and he began hitting a few shots.”

Crawford grabbed a three-point lead in the fourth quarter, and the margin swayed from one to three points before foul-plagued Luke Johnson and Bryany Knigge hit shots to wipe out the deficit.

“Earlier in the year, we were missing some of those shots,” Miller said. “I guess now is a good time for them to start going in.”

P-D was just 8 of 15 from the foul line, but Bryant Knigge sank a pair and Jake Johnson and Brady Knigge both made one free throw to keep Crawford at bay.

Bryant Knigge finished with 17 points, brother Brady adding nine, Luke Johnson eight and Jake Johnson seven.

No other Crawford player scored more than six points.

P-D will await the winner of the D1-11 Subdistrict, either top-ranked Paxton (22-0) or Stapleton/McPherson County in Tuesday night’s District 1-6 title game.

If Paxton wins, as expected, the game would be played Tuesday night at Creek Valley.
