MITCHELL — Leyton boys basketball coach Gary Oltmann wasn’t in the mood for horsing around Tuesday night in his team’s post-season opener.
Coming out in a full-court press against Banner County, the top-seeded and once-beaten Warriors steamrolled the Wildcats with a 30-2 start, en route to a 65-34 romp in the Mitchell D2-12 semifinals.
“We haven’t come right out and started with a press,” Oltmann said. “From the tip, we ran and jumped at them, playing them a man the entire court.”
Junior Dylan Brenner and senior Sam Schumacher were big beneficiaries of the huge first-period surge, scoring 11 and seven points, respectively, and LHS (19-1) led 30-4 at the first stop.
From that point on, the Warriors more or less coasted, finishing with four players in double figures.
Schumacher and Brenner both put in 13 points, Brennen Cruise and Cody McKay adding a dozen each.
Cruise (nine) and Brenner (six) led Leyton in rebounding, and both had six assists.
Ben Hostetler and Jason Dahlgrin had 11 points apiece for Banner (3-18).
Leyton, seeking a second straight trip to the Class D2 state finals, will meet Sioux County (12-10) in Thursday’s 6 p.m. championship game, weather permitting. Sioux clipped Hay Springs 46-41 in Tuesday’s second semifinal contest.
