Leyton High School 2012 graduate Justine Peters was awarded the Sidney P.E.O. Chapter’s FR and BO 2012 scholarship award.
The award is given annually to a graduating senior at a Cheyenne County high school who applies and goes through the selection process.
The criteria used in selecting a candidate for this award are whether or not the student exhibits excellence in academics, leadership, extracurricular activities, community service and has potential for future success, according to Sandy White, a member on the selection committee.
In high school Peters participated in volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, track, show choir, honor society and the school speech team. Peters also served as class secretary and assisted with the One Act.
If that high school involvement wasn’t enough, Peters also showed many times with the Nebraska Quarter Horse Youth Association and was a participant in the Central Plains Reining Horse Association.
Peters is in her first year at Oklahoma State University with Nutrition Sciences as her field of study. She still works with horses and shows reining horses while being a member of the NCAA Equestrian Team.
While participating in these extracurricular activities she has also managed to achieve a 4.0 GPA her first semester at school.
Both Sidney P.E.O. chapters were involved in the selection process and Peters is being awarded the $750 scholarship upon the successful completion of her first college semester.
The P.E.O. chapters began awarding the local scholarship in 2010, according to White.
“Young women who are residents of the county and who attend a school in Cheyenne County are eligible,” she said.
The P.E.O chapters hope to continue the scholarship award for years to come and White said that the organization is dedicated to promoting the education of women throughout the world.
