Raiders cruise on the road

MITCHELL – Sidney High School’s boys basketball team gave up a few big shots early Saturday afternoon at Mitchell, but as the game progressed, the Raiders hit several themselves.

Nailing nine 3-point shots and improving defensively over the final three periods, Erik Kohl’s Raiders improved to 14-7 with an easy 74-42 win.

“Mitchell hit us in the mouth early,” Kohl said. “They hit some big shots in the first quarter, but as the game went along we got better. We set a goal of multiple quarters of allowing 10 points or less a quarter, and we did that in three of the four quarters.”

SHS was clinging to a 20-16 lead after one quarter, then matched that output in the second period, while limiting the Tigers (10-9) to 10 points the rest of the half.

Net result: Sidney led 40-26 at the half.

“We did a much better job passing the ball around,” Kohl said, “and we had a good shooting effort.”

The Raiders began dropping treys – Lane Harvey sank four and Paxton Ehler two – and the game became an immediately blowout.

Sidney led 50-36 at the third stop, then tacked on 24 points in the fourth period, just for good measure.

Ehler led the way with 18 points, Harvey adding 17 and Casey Mabey 12. Jamie Segler paced Mitchell with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.

Sidney closes the regular season Friday night by hosting Alliance, and will learn in the next few days where it will be seeded in the upcoming Scottsbluff B-6 District, to be played at Western Nebraska Community College.

As it stands now, Sidney is the No. 3 seed behind top seed Scottsbluff and McCook.
