Sidney’s long-range sniping does in Chadron

When the Sidney High School boyss’ basketball team is making shots as it did Friday night, the best an opponent can do it pack it in.

Knocking down 11 treys — all but two of those coming from Paxton Ehler and Casey Mabey — Erik Kohl’s club improved to 13-7 with an easy 60-36 victory against Chadron at Sidney Middle School.

“It was just a month ago, when we were needing guys to stay after practice to shoot,” Kohl said. “It looks like it is beginning to pay off. Now guys are staying and shooting after practice.”

Mabey scored eight points in the first quarter, which saw Sidney run off to a 13-2 lead. Mabey had a pair of long-range baskets, and Ehler came off the bench and nailed his first shot from the right week to spark the Raiders early.

Mabey (14 points) and Ehler (11) carried SHS in the first half, and it was good enough to offset Chadron’s 6-foot-8 Spencer Eliason. Eliason scored all 10 of his team’s points before intermission, but they were hardly enough.

Ehler spiked a trey out of the left corner to give Sidney a comfortable 28-10 halftime lead, and the Raiders weren’t tested the rest of the way: Eliason scored one basket in the second half.

“Eliason creates matchup problems for us due to his height,” Kohl said, “but Logan Lewis once again made him work for his scores and rebounds.”

Mabey cooled off and didn’t score in the second half, but Ehler kept going, scoring eight more points to finish with a game-high 19 points. Mabey finished with 14 points, Arterburn seven.

Kohl made mention of his seniors playing their final home game: Mabey, Sam Arterburn and Paul Beyer.

Beyer, injured last year and limited to serving as a team manager this winter, got to dress and even started for Sidney.

“Those kids have all worked their tails off,” Kohl said of his seniors.

Sidney plays at Mitchell this afternoon at approximately 4 p.m., weather permitting.
