Soren ‘Sam’ P. Hansen

1941 to 2013

Soren “Sam” P. Hansen is now ranching in the great open sky. The Lord called him to do morning chores on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013.

Funeral services for Sam, 71, will be Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Broadwater at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Silverthorn Cemetery. Visitation will be at Bridgeport Memorial Chapel on Thursday, from 2 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a memorial be designated to the Broadwater Fire Department or the Lisco Cemetery Memorial Fence Fund.

Sam was born on June 29, 1941, to Peter J and Mildred W. (Anderson) Hansen at the home place south of Lisco.

He attended Bridgeport Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1959. He received numerous awards during his lifetime, which include Nebraska State FFA Farmer of the year award while in high school; Bridgeport Jaycee’s Outstanding Young Farmer 1973-74; and the Knight of Aksarben Good Neighbor Award in 1976.

At the young age of 11, his dad died and he became active in the ranching business with his two older brothers. Cattle and horses were his first love. In 1985, Sam started working for Ogallala Livestock Auction and was currently a personal representative for them in his spare time. He was well known for his knowledge in the trading of cattle.

Sam’s second love was children. He enjoyed being around his young nieces and nephews as well as all the other children of the community. Everyone probably has a story to tell about Sam. Ever since the $2 bill was made, Sam gave them to his nieces and nephew each year for Christmas.

Sam is survived by siblings, Hilda Mull, Elna Miller, Lela (Thomas) Olmsted, Percy (Marlys) Hansen, Thelma (David) Smith and Donna Hansen; nieces and nephews- Betty (Fred) Mangel, Louis Jacobson, Loraine Baker, Ken (Enid) Jacobson, Jim(Stephanie) Jacobson, Eric (Allison) Miller, Phil (Anne) Hansen, Chris (Joe) McNurlin, Todd Hansen, Marcy (Mike) Spooner, Greg (Carlene) Hansen, Denise Matson, Dana (Tonia) Hansen, and Kerry (Misty) Smith; along with numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Pearl (Carl) Jacobson, George Hansen, Robert Mull and Gene Miller; as well as two nieces, Diana Hansen and Mary Mull.
