Whereas the Sidney High School girls basketball team waited a full first half before kicking in a long rally against Scottsbluff, the Lady Raiders Saturday evening wasted little time the second time around.
Trailing 9-5 early, Tyler Shaw’s Raiders scored the final 12 points of the first period, then kept up the pace the rest of the way in an easy 55-32 win at Cabela’s Athletics Facility.
“We shot the ball better tonight,” Shaw said of Saturday’s win, after his team struggled mightily the night before in beating Gering. “Defensively, we limited (Scottsbluff) to one shot.”
The Lady Bearcats — one-time winners in 17 outings — threw up wild shots and tried to chase the rebound down, but that ploy didn’t work.
After Scottsbluff’s Liz Cunningham made a three-point play early, the visitors held a 9-5 advantage.
That lead didn’t last long: Sidney came roaring back on a Sarah Krueger rebound basket, a Jeni Heeren 3-pointer, an inbounds score by Abbi Porter and Sarah Mahr’s trey to turn the tables at the first stop for Sidney at 17-9.
Cody Rowley made a pair of foul shots to open the second period, as SHS (14-5) capped a 14-0 run. Sidney kept that lead and then pulled away at the close of the first half, when Rowley and Kylee Price (returning from a two-game absence due to a concussion) made a free throw each before Price put the perfect capper on the second period.
On the dead run, Price launched a half-court shot than banked in off the north glass, good for a 29-15 Sidney lead at intermission.
Shaw’s club kept things going in the second half, outscoring Scottsbluff 18-4 in the third period to take complete control. Mahr and Morgan Linneman opened the third quarter with scores, and kept piling on with baskets from Heeren, Karissa Segelke and Madi Malzahn before Porter tossed in a pair of foul shots for a 43-17 lead.
SHS led 47-19 at the third break, and cruised the rest of the way.
Mahr scored 13 to lead Sidney, Heeren finished with nine, Rowley eight, Segelke seven and Porter six.
“The shots we were making from outside of course opened things up inside for us,” Shaw said. “It also got us to the foul line.”
And the charity stripe was quite good to Sidney this time around, as the Raiders hit 18 of 22 attempts (81.8 percent). Rowley produced all her scoring without a basket, making 8 of 10 tries at the foul line.
Kiley Guerue scored 10 points to lead Scottsbluff.
Sidney is idle until hosting powerful Class C foe Chadron Friday. The game will be played in the Sidney Middle School, as SHS will be hosting the Class B District inside Cabela’s Athletics Facility.
