Creek Valley squads swept by visiting Sutherland

CHAPPELL — Despite owning but one win heading into Thursday evening, Sutherland High School’s boys’ basketball team doubled its win count at the expense of host Creek Valley, 55-49.

“Defensive breakdowns and a lack of rebounding really hurt us ,” Storm coach Roger Behrends said.

Sutherland (2-13) had just four players contribute in the scoring column, but the one-two punch of Tyler Fear and Brett Good was too much to overcome for the Storm (5-9).

Fear scored 28 points, but struggled to hit just half of his eight free-throw attempts.

With the Sailors ahead 52-49, Fear misfired on two charity tosses in the final half-minute, giving Creek Valley a chance to tie with a 3-point basket.

However, Storm leading scorer Sam Behrends was a tad off from long distance, and Fear rebounded and after being fouled again, sank a pair of foul shots to ice the verdict.

Brett Good contributed 16 points to the Sutherland cause.

S. Behrends scored 17 points to pace Creek, Luke Cavalli adding 14.

Creek hosts Garden County to both girls and boys varsity contests this evening.
