Seniors spark Warriors past Coyotes

DALTON — A big second quarter by Leyton High School’s girls basketball team enabled the Warriors to grab a halftime lead en route to a 41-32 victory against Cheyenne County rival Potter-Dix Tuesday evening.

Tuesday’s game was a makeup of the Jan. 11 postponement.

Tessa Lukesh scored 13 points and senior classmate Rachael Ernest added 12 for the Warriors (8-5).

“Our senior leaders stepped up for us tonight,” LHS coach Rol Rushman said. “Katy Ernest also had a big night for us. She had nine blocked shots and 11 rebounds. I was kind of bewildered by that stat.”

Conner Wolff, P-D’s leading scorer, picked up a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Amanda Maas grabbed nine rebounds, Juliet Ball seven.

Both teams are back in action Friday: Leyton hosts Minatare and P-D is at home to meet Banner County.
