SHS grapplers second at Chase Co.

OGALLALA — Picking up four champions and placing seven entries in the top three, Sidney High School’s wrestling team finished a solid second in the team standing at Thursday’s make-up of the Chase County Invitational.

“It was good to get some competitive mat time for our wrestlers” Red Raiders coach John Ganser said. “We wrestled nine kids and seven of them placed in the top three.”

North Platte St. Patrick won the team title with 132 points, narrowly nipping Sidney (126.5). Hershey (103) was third and Dundy County Station (99).

Those winning championships for SHS were Michael Muggli (132 pounds), Lane Riley (145), Tanner Wintholz (195) and Scott Kelsey (220).

In title bouts, Muggli decisioned Adam Pasquinally of North Platte, 8-2; Riley edged Hershey’s Jacob Thompson, 7-5; Wintholz won by major decision (11-0) against Dundy County Station’s Trevor Jensen; and Kelsey won by an 18-0 tech fall against Robert Hannah of Cambridge.

Also reaching championship bouts were Tanner Wernsman (152 pounds) and Kane Taylor (170) and 138-pounder Nathaniel Votruba was third in his wieght class.

“Brandon Lulf (182) and Tucker Wintholz (heavyweight) both won matches, scored team points, but did not place in the top four,” Ganser said.

The next action for Sidney’s wrestlers will be Saturday at the John Higgins Invitaitonal in Lexington, with varsity beginning at 8 a.m. MST.
