Twila J. Petersen

1931 to 2013

Twila J. Petersen, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Golden Living Center-Meadowbrook in Rapid City, S.D.

Twila was born on June 1, 1931 in Carleton, Neb., to Amos B. and Anna L. (Dirks) Hoffert. The family frequently moved around eastern Nebraska during her childhood years. Twila’s dad worked for a farmer and then got a job for the Sioux Army Depot near Potter doing construction work. The family moved to Potter in the early 1940’s. She graduated from Potter High School in 1949. In 1951, Twila started working at Sioux Army Depot doing clerical work for several years.

Twila met Henry Petersen and the two married in 1956 at Potter Methodist Church. Their love for the outdoors and for Harley Motorcycles made them the perfect match. They loved to ride their motorcycles and picnic in Greenwood on a private ranch. To this union, two children were born, Susan and Steve.

The family moved to Rapid City in 1964 and truly loved everything about the Black Hills. They took advantage of the many opportunities the Black Hills had to offer. As a family, they enjoyed camping; where Twila was known to pack up the whole house and bring it with them.

Her hobbies included reading, scrap booking, working puzzles, and walking dogs. Twila was known for her delicious red cakes she made from scratch. No family celebration was complete without Twila’s red cake. Twila was very organized and took her domestic duties very seriously. She quit her job so she could become more involved in being a mother and a homemaker. She kept a neat house and always had meals ready for Henry and her children. Although she didn’t have any grandchildren, her “grand-dogs” were really important to her. Her daughter Susi’s Husky “Ice” had a very special place in her heart. Her relatives and family were also very important to her.

Twila will be remembered for being a very loving wife, mother, and friend.

She is survived by her loving husband, Henry “Hank” Petersen, Rapid City; son, Steve (Cynthia) Petersen, Chandler, Ariz .; and daughter, Susan “Susi” Petersen, Rapid City.

Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Savot officiating. The family will greet friends and family following the service.

Burial will be at Potter Community Cemetery in Potter at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

Her online guestbook is available to sign at http://www.osheimschmidt.com
