Creek boys nipped by Minatare; Lady Storm win

CHAPPELL — A tough night got even rougher Saturday evening for the Creek Valley High School boys basketball team.

Not only did Roger Behrends’ Storm drop a nail-biting 41-39 decision to visiting Minatare, but but the team likely lost point guard Lane Godfrey for the balance of the season.

“Godfrey broke his arm in the second quarter, so he is probably out for the season,” Behrends said.

Minatare’s Javier Guerrero scored 14 points, and Yovan Perez added 11, including the game-winner at the buzzer.

CV (4-4) could get scoring from only four sources, and just three after Godfrey was injured. Luke Cavalli managed 15 points, Sam Behrends 14 to lead CV. Godfrey scored five in his limited time, and Colin Brott also had five points to round out the Storm’s scoring.

The game was close throughout, and CV led 35-32 after three periods before Minatare (5-1) turned the tide at the buzzer.

In the girls’ contest, Creek Valley was an easy 54-17 winner. Stefanie Mitchell, who earned a start after a strong effort off the bench Friday night, had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Lady Storm (3-5). Jill Behrends added nine points, Summer Mueller eight.

Creek Valley takes the short jaunt across the state line tonight to meet Peetz, Colo., in a pair of contests.
