Joseph Jack Lechman, 89, of Chappell, died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 19, 2012, at Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell.
Mass of Christian Burial has taken place at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chappell with Father Steven Deaver officiating. Burial followed in the Chappell Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or the Miller Memorial Care Center.

Joseph Jack Lechman was born April 9, 1923, in Atwood, Colo., the son of Adam Conrad and Christina Elizabeth (Lechman) Lechman. He received his high school diploma from Julesburg High School in 1941. After his father died he farmed with his brothers until 1949 when he operated the farm on his own. During World War II he worked in Hawaii. He built homes in Denver with his brothers Tom and John.
On Dec. 27, 1955, he was united in marriage to Ruby Iva Stahr in Denver. He moved to Chappell in 1959 and was a teacher’s aide at Western Nebraska Technical College in Sidney.
In the early 1970’s Joe and Ruby started their own business, Lechman’s Springcrest Draperies in Chappell which they operated until retiring due to Ruby’s health in 2005.
Joe enjoyed working with his hands building many things. He will be remembered for always looking for a more efficient way of doing things. He had a woodworking shop where he built cabinets and remodeled many homes.
He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion and Senior Center. He and Ruby enjoyed traveling with Springcrest Drapery.
Survivors include his sister, Catherine Stahr of Chappell; sisters-in-law, Mozelle Lechman of Elizabeth, Colo., and Ruth Lechman of Roseville, Calif .; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby; five brothers, John, Frank, Adam, Tom and George; and one sister, Annie Borm.
Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations is Chappell is serving the Lechman family.
