HEMINGFORD – Leyton High School’s boys basketball team had to wait a year for its chance, but the Warriors didn’t waste the opportunity Saturday night to atone for last year’s triple-overtime home loss to Hemingford.
Holding a five-point halftime lead, Gary Oltmann’s team ratcheted its defense in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 22-11 in the second half of a key 50-34 nonconference road matchup.
The victory raised LHS’s mark to 6-0.
“We got our revenge,” Oltmann said. “We held onto our appointment with them, and this game has been on our minds since last year.”
Even so, the Warriors got off to a slow start, trailing 6-0 before scoring nine straight to take the lead. Hemingford (3-2) did manage to tie the game at 9-all, but Leyton took the lead for good after that, leading 14-10 after a period and 28-23 at intermission.
“In the second half, our defense took over,” Oltmann said. “We didn’t change anything we did, and we stayed with our basic man concept and shut them down.”
Despite playing with the flu bug, Sam Schumacher led all scorers with 18 points. Brennen Cruise put up a double-double performance, scoring 14 points and hauling in 15 rebounds.
Matthew Wood paced Hemingford with 12 points.
Leyton will host Peetz (Colo.) tonight, in the final contest prior to the holiday break.

The Lady Bobcats (3-2) grabbed the lead for good with about a minute to play, and held on.
