Dorothy Sophia Hokom, the daughter of John W. and Anna (Niebaum) Theis, was born April 23, 1912, at Plainview. At the age of nine years, she moved with her family to Lodgepole. They settled in the Sunny Side Community where she attended school to the tenth grade. The 11th and 12th grades were in Lodgepole from where she graduated in 1929. She graduated from Palmer Secretarial College in Denver.

On Dec. 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to John Hokom in Sidney. They celebrated their 40th anniversary before John died in March of 1980. After their marriage they lived on the Hokom family farm west of Sunol until 1946, at which time they moved to the Sunny Side Community. Here they raised their family Janet, Gene and Carol. In 1962 they moved into Lodgepole to take care of Dorothy’s mother.

Dorothy was employed as a secretary for a short time. It was too confining a job, so she became self-employed as a housekeeper for women in need of help. She thoroughly enjoyed the years spent in their employment. She stopped working at the age of 98.

She also baked wedding cakes during the 1950’s to 1980’s. She supplied Lodgepole with all types of baked goods, pies, cakes, rolls, etc. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting hats and making baby quilts for the AIDS babies.

Dorothy was a 4-H leader for 25 years and a 4-H member when she was young. She was a member of the Lodgepole United Methodist Church for more than 67 years, a member of the United Methodist Church Women and taught Sunday school for 15 years. She belonged to the Helping Hand Club at Sunny Side and Extension Club for 15 years. In 2002, at the age of 90, she was honored to be the Queen of Old Steelers Days in Lodgepole, along with Russell Olsen who was King. The Olsen’s were neighbors in the Sunny Side Community. In 2009, at the Lodgepole Alumni, she was honored as being the oldest living graduate and had been out of school for 80 years. She was still living at the time of the 2012 reunion, but was unable to attend.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Janet and husband Kent Fox of Olathe, Kan .; her son, Gene Hokom and wife Virginia of Lexington; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Carol Leal in 1996; Carol’s husband, Don Leal in 2003; a brother, Lester Theis; and sisters Ethel Brandl and Esther Feikert.
