BAYARD – Sam Schumacher fired in 21 points Saturday evening, leading Leyton High School’s boys basketball Warriors to a 50-32 victory against host Bayard in the finals of the Tigers Invitational.
“We got off to a good start,” Warriors coach Gary Oltmann said. “We knew they’d make a run, and they did cut it to seven points before we got it going a little bit there at the end.”
LHS (2-0) got off to a 14-6 lead after a period, and pulled away grudgingly, leading 21-14 at halftime and 36-25 heading into the fourth quarter.
Brennan Cruise contributed 15 points and Dylan Brenner nine for the Warriors.
In the girls tournament, the LHS girls team knocked off Bayard, 40-34, to capture third place. Kaitlyn Berner dropped 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and snagged four steals to lead the Warriors (1-0). Kelsey Waite added 10 points, seven rebounds and also had four steals in addition to blocking three shots. Cousins Rachael and Katy Ernest shared team-high rebounding honors with eight each.
LHS will host South Platte Friday.

to Caliche
PEETZ (Colo.) – Caliche grabbed first-quarter leads in both championship games Saturday night, and the host Peetz Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs had to settle for second-place in their respective Caliche Classic tournaments.
Tera Segelke’s Lady Bulldogs squad found itself down 22-3 at the first stop, and never recovered in a 62-30 loss.
Shalyn Johnson scored 14 points and Jenna Zink pitched in 12 and Taylor Weingardt 11 for Caliche, which led 41-15 at halftime and 50-23 after three periods.
Beth Berhardt scored 11 points and Mikenna Curlee tacked on eight points and hauled in nine rebounds.
Tom Karnick poured in 25 points for the Bulldogs’ boys, but they weren’t enough in dropping a 77-54 decision to Caliche.
Caliche took an 18-11 edge into the second quarter, then expanded the advantage to 42-27 at intermission. Peetz cut into the deficit slightly in the third quarter, but was outscored 22-9 in the fourth frame.
Josh Fiscus scored 13 points and Austin Crane put in eight points and pulled down eight rebounds for Peetz, and Troy Clevenger had a game-high 14 boards.
Both Bulldogs’ teams are 1-1, and will host Haxton Dec. 11.

Potter-Dix sweeps
at Banner County
HARRRISBURG – After splitting their Friday season openers at home against Sedgwick County, the Potter-Dix boys and girls basketball teams posted a pair of road wins Saturday night at Banner County.
P-D’s boys got a game-high 16 points from Bryant Knigge in a 51-35 victory. The Coyotes (1-1)led 17-6 after a quarter, and were never headed. Brady Knigge tossed in eight points, as did Kyle Gorsuch, in the victory.
Conner Wolff almost outscored the Lady Wildcats herself, scoring 18 points as the Coyotes girls team rolled to an easy 53-19 win.
P-D (2-0) edged out to a 10-4 advantage after a period, then pulled away from a 19-9 halftime lead by outscoring Banner 34-10 the rest of the way.
Taylor Juelfs added 12 points , Dakota Ramsey six for the Coyotes.

Creek Valley sweeps
visiting Maxwell
CHAPPELL – Host Creek Valley, which split Friday night at Hyannis, swept visiting Maxwell in girls and boys varsity basketball contest Saturday afternoon.
Bill Wilber’s Lady Storm, 54-53 losers at Hyannis the night before, rebounded to post a 45-38 win Saturday against Maxwell (0-2).
CV (1-1) went on a 32-19 scoring binge in the middle quarters, turning 12-10 first-period arrears into a 42-31 command heading into the final frame.
Jerry Straber scored a game-high 17 points for the Storm, adding seven rebounds, seven assists and 10 steals. Summer Mueller, who scored 22 points in the season-opening loss Friday, added nine points and 12 rebounds. Madi Blackwelder and Shania Brown both scored seven points.
Creek Valley’s boys squad, a 43-14 winner Friday at Hyannis, edged past Maxwell, 40-37 Saturday, rallying in the fourth period, reversing a three-point deficit.
Luke Cavalli picked up a double-double for the Storm, working inside for 20 points and hauling in 11 rebounds. Sam Behrends added 11 points and pulled down seven missed shots. Behrends had 17 points in Friday’s contest.
Both teams host Potter-Dix Friday night.
