NORTH PLATTE — For a pair of exhibition contests, the Sidney High School basketball teams managed to get some much-needed work against North Platte Monday night, in preparation for their respective season openers this week.
Tyler Shaw’s Lady Raiders dropped a 53-46 decision to the Bulldogs, while Erik Kohl’s Red Raiders boys fell, 56-42.
Both games were exhibitions, with all proceeds from Monday’s “jamboree” games used to assist the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame.
The Raiders boys fell behind 20-11 after a quarter, and were down 35-18 at the half against their Class A foe.
“We had a lot of turnovers in the first half, and we had trouble with our spacing,” Kohl said. “We did a much better job in limiting our floor errors in the second half, and we also did a good job of holding them to fewer points in each quarter. If we continue to do that, things should be all right.”
Lane Harvey led the Raiders in scoring with 10 points, Logan Lewis and Sam Arterburn adding nine each. Newcomer Casey Mabey — a Utah transfer — scored six points.
Sidney buried seven 3-point baskets. Harvey knocked down two, as did Arterburn, with Mabey, Hunter Vowers and Paxton Ehler each hitting one trey.
“Unofficially, we had 15 turnovers, so we can improve on that,” Kohl noted. “We feel it was a good tune-up for Thursday.”
The Lady Raiders fell 53-43 in their contest. North Platte led 17-9 after a quarter, 29-23 at the half and 37-31 at the third stop.
Abbi Porter led Sidney in scoring with eight points on 3 of 5 shooting from the floor, and Jeni Heeren added seven points.
Top returning scorer Karissa Segelke struggled, finishing with seven points while making just 2 of 9 shots. Segelke made just one shot in five tries beyond the 3-point arc.
North Platte outrebounded Sidney, 36-31.
“It was a good opportunity to play a Class A team to get us ready for (the Western Conference) tournament this week,” Shaw said.”We’re going to work on some little things we need to do better offensively and defensively.”
Both teams will play in this weekend’s Western Conference tournament, beginning with satellite games Thursday at home against Mitchell.
The Lady Raiders will take on Mitchell at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, with the two schools’ boys teams going at it at approximately 7 p.m.
Semifinals in both championship and consolation play are slated for Friday in Scottsbluff, at both the high school and Western Nebraska Community College, with the finals on Saturday, with all finals games being played at WNCC.
